Relief and sustainability
The Silvertown Tunnel project involves the construction of a 1.4 kilometre road tunnel under the River Thames, linking Silvertown with North Greenwich Peninsula.
It is the first road tunnel in London to offer specially designed bus lanes for double-decker buses, significantly improving public transport connections in this fast-growing part of east London.
The concept envisages that around 37 zero-emission buses will be able to pass through the tunnel every hour, reducing journey times by up to 20 minutes. With its focus on sustainable mobility, the project will help to relieve congestion in the busy Blackwall Tunnel and make an important contribution to improving air quality in the entire region.
