North Main S-Bahn

Project description

With the construction of two additional tracks north of the Main between Frankfurt and Hanau, Deutsche Bahn is further expanding local transport in the Rhine-Main region with the Nordmainische S-Bahn. In future, a new S-Bahn line will connect the east of Frankfurt with Maintal and Hanau. We are carrying out the VP1 planning approval section. This includes the tunnel with two single-track tubes towards Frankfurt East, an emergency exit, the eastern tunnel portal as a trough structure built using the cut-and-cover method, and the new Frankfurt am Main (East) station. In addition, we are constructing various small shafts to safeguard existing buildings during construction and to remove obstacles along the planned tunnel route.

Construction method

Tunnel construction – Eastern tunnel portal

  • Routing of the S-Bahn line parallel to Ostparkstraße before entering the tunnel
  • Construction as a trough structure and tunnel using the open-cut method
  • Lowering of the line by approximately 100 metres to the tunnel depth
  • Transition from the open-cut section to the tunnel entrance


Mechanised tunnel construction

  • Tunnel route from the railway facilities on Ostparkstraße to Konstablerwache
  • Construction of two single-track tunnel tubes with a total length of approximately 1.1 km 
  • Connection to the City Tunnel stubs built back in the 1980s


TBM tunnelling

  • Use of 2 × 2 TBMs 
    • East Tunnel: approx. 290 metres
    • West tunnel: approx. 810 metres
    • Additional section through the station excavation pit: approx. 270 metres

  • Use of a hydro-shield for both tubes
  • TBM diameter: approx. 8.60 metres
  • Segmental lining


Frankfurt am Main (East) station

  • Construction of a new underground S-Bahn station at a depth of approx. 20 metres
  • Two platforms, each 210 metres long and 10 metres wide
  • Two modern, accessible entrances on and near Danziger Platz
  • Additional emergency access at the eastern end of the station
  • Ensuring the flow of traffic at Danziger Platz during the construction period
  • Construction of the station using the top-down method

Expansion of local transport in the Rhine-Main region

In future, the North Main S-Bahn will connect the eastern part of Frankfurt city centre, Maintal and Hanau directly to the Rhine-Main S-Bahn network, making it one of the region’s most important rail expansion projects. The groundwork for this is already partly in place, as the expansion of the network was taken into account at an early stage as part of urban development and transport planning. The construction project is divided into three sections – Frankfurt, Maintal and Hanau – and will create greater capacity as well as a clear separation between local and long-distance services. Passengers will therefore benefit from greater reliability, improved punctuality and increased comfort. During peak hours, the Nordmainische S-Bahn will serve the region at 15-minute intervals. The service will be complemented by modernised, accessible stations along the Frankfurt–Hanau route.
