Project description

The U5 light rail line is being extended from the main railway station via Platz der Republik westwards into the Europaviertel
The project is one of the largest infrastructure schemes in the city of Frankfurt am Main and is designed to connect the growing Europaviertel district to the local public transport network
The new line is approximately 2.7 kilometres long and comprises four stations: Güterplatz, Emser Brücke/Messe, Europagarten and Europaviertel West
Around 30,000 people live and work in the Europaviertel. The U5 will provide an efficient public transport link for them

Construction method

Scope of works for Wayss & Freytag:

Construction of approximately 2,600 m of track-supporting slabs in two tunnel tubes that have already been completed
Construction of the track-supporting slab predominantly as a slab-on-grade track
Concrete is being poured for shaft duct systems on both sides, running parallel to the tracks, which will also serve as edge, emergency and rescue routes in future
A total of 48 km of empty conduits are being installed
Implementation under challenging inner-city conditions and alongside ongoing expansion works
Access to the construction site via the existing underground network

Sustainable mobility for Frankfurt’s Europaviertel

The extension of the U5 line will provide the Europaviertel with a direct light rail link to Frankfurt city centre and the main railway station. The project is a key component in the sustainable development of this modern urban district. The new line will improve accessibility for residents, workers and visitors, and will promote public transport over private car use. Wayss & Freytag is contributing to the technical completion of the new underground line by constructing the underground trackwork. Together with Rhomberg Sersa, it is installing track systems, cable routes and emergency and service access routes within the tunnel tubes that have already been constructed.
