A new theatre for Rostock
The Rostock Volkstheater has long since reached its limits: structurally dilapidated, confusing, technically outdated and no longer capable of renovation. Everyday life behind the scenes makes this particularly clear: props and stage elements have to be laboriously carried up more than 20 steps and through narrow doors. The stage set props, which can weigh up to 150 kilograms, are not moved automatically but by hand using conventional counter hoists. Even the stage portrait bridge is controlled by a historic machine from 1943.
This is why a new building is needed that meets modern requirements and gives the theatre new space and magic. The new four-section theatre with state-of-the-art stage technology and variable performance options will enter into a dialogue with the historic buildings on Lange Straße in Rostock. The curtain is set to rise for the first time for the autumn 2028 season.
