Improving water quality
To improve water quality, London's water and wastewater company, Thames Water, is investing in a three-stage expansion of its wastewater system.
From 2023, the Thames Tideway Tunnel will collect wastewater from 34 of London's largest discharge points over a length of 25 kilometres, dam it and discharge it into the Lee Tunnel. The main tunnel, with an internal diameter of up to 7.2 m, will start at a depth of around 30 m in Acton, run eastwards through central London beneath the Thames and end at a depth of around 70 m at the Lee Tunnel in the Abbey Mills pumping station.
