Cut-and-Cover Tunnels

Tunnels, retained cuts and top-down excavations - special kinds of traffic structure.

Wherever geology and inner city traffic conditions permit, cut-and-cover tunnels, retained cuts and top-down excavations are preferred for financial reasons. Moreover, almost all access and exit ramps of shield-driven tunnels, which take traffic underground and back to the surface, are also constructed within sheet-piled excavations.

Cut-and-cover tunnels rank high among the numerous traffic route projects carried out by Wayss & Freytag Ingenieurbau AG. Important structures of this kind, either already completed or currently under construction, are the Berlin Inner Ring S21 and the Leipzig City Tunnel, Contract C.
