Enthusiasm at the Luxembourg Tunnel Run

Shortly before the motorway tunnels Grouft and Stafelter Berg in the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg were due to be opened to traffic, 2,365 Luxembourg runners took advantage of the unique possibility to run through them. 55 enthusiastic children ran a 1.5 km course, while the adult runners could choose between a distance of either 5 or 10 km. The Secretary of Sports, Romain Schneider, joined the runners. Lots of people also attended the “open house day” in the afternoon. Numerous visitors explored both tunnels and informed themselves about tunnel construction and safety technology.

Wayss & Freytag Ingenieurbau, Areas South and Benelux built the two tunnels, 3 and 2 km long respectively, as leader in a joint venture together with their Belgian affiliate Galère and further partners. The Luxembourg Ministère des Travaux Publics, Administration des Ponts et Chaussées (Luxembourg Ministry for Public Works, Administration of Bridges and Roads) is the client for this project. With the construction of the two double-tube road tunnels, the Northern motorway A7 was complete and the important North-South link of the country in the heart of Europe created.

The tunnels Grouft and Stafelter Berg will be opened to traffic during a ceremony on September 23, 2015 with numerous invited guests and media representatives.
