New contract – Stormwater Sewer in Berlin

Wayss & Freytag Ingenieurbau AG, Tunnelling Division, was awarded the contract for the construction of the „Mauerpark” stormwater sewer in Berlin in joint venture with the Berlin company Stehmeyer + Bischoff. Berliner Wasserbetriebe (Berlin Water Companies), the largest municipal water supplier in Germany, is the client of this project. The pipe jacking works for the stormwater sewer with an inner diameter of 3.80 meters form the centrepiece of this contract.
With a contract value of approx. 12 million € (W&F share 70 %), the contract comprises the construction of the start and target shafts as sheet pile walls as well as the construction of 19 subsequently built intermediate shafts. Furthermore, the stormwater sewer is to be connected to the existing sewer system.
In future, the stormwater sewer is designed to store up to 7,400 cubic meters of water and thus prevents the waters in Berlin from being polluted during heavy rainfall. At present, the capacity of the sewage treatment plants in Berlin is insufficient to cope with heavy rainfall so that wastewater runs unfiltered from the streets into the local water bodies. The new stormwater sewer will stop this environmental pollution. The works will start in October 2017 and are due to be completed by end of 2019.
