Wehrhahn Line opened

During the weekend, the Mayor of Düsseldorf Geisel opened the Wehrhahn Line in the capital of North Rhine Westphalia together with State Secretary Enak Ferlemann (Member of the German Bundestag (Parliament), MdB), Federal Secretary for Construction, Michael Groschek (Member of the Landtag (regional parliament), MdL), W&F Board Member Dr.-Eng. Michael Blaschko and Head of the Area Thomas Fiedler with a big public celebration. As technical leader in a joint venture, Wayss & Freytag Ingenieurbau built construction lot 2, the underpass of Kaufhof at “Kö” by the order of the Federal Capital of Dusseldorf, Department of Traffic Management.

The approx. 75 m long tunnel runs under the listed Kaufhof building in the heart of the city of Dusseldorf, which makes the underpass a civil engineering challenge. The tunnel was driven under the protection of a freezing body. With a complex monitoring concept the engineers successfully controlled possible settlements of the Art nouveau building in the millimeter range: there were indeed no settlements of the building as a result of the construction works underground. More than 100,000 guests celebrated the opening of the new traffic artery and made use of the free ride along the line. The new underground line is designed to transport more than 50,000 people per day.
