Breakthrough for Cannstatt Tunnel

With the breakthrough of the Cannstatt Tunnel, the client DB Netz AG (German Railways) celebrated a milestone in the Stuttgart 21 project. Wayss & Freytag Ingenieurbau, Area South, is building the approx. 6.1 km long railway tunnel as part of a joint venture. Head of German Railways, Rüdiger Grube, celebrated the breakthrough together with the Vice State Premier ,Thomas Strobl (CDU – Christian Democrats Party), Mayor Fritz Kuhn (Grüne – the Green Party) as well as W&F Board Member Dr.-Eng. Michael Blaschko and Project Manager Thomas Müller. „This is also a very emotional day, since it is the first breakthrough of a tunnel within the Stuttgart 21 project“, commented German Railways Head Grube. The tunnel, which is being constructed in the drill and blast method and with a tunnel excavator, shall be completed by 2018.
