Last breakthrough made
Milestone for Cannstatt Tunnel

In the construction of the Cannstatt tunnel, the last breakthrough took place in full compliance to the current protection measures in the corona pandemic. Wayss & Freytag Ingenieurbau constructed the suburban railway tunnel in a consortium. The tunnel is part of the Stuttgart-Ulm railway project. The client, DBPSU GmbH, had invited a small group of selected participants. The ceremony was attended by Winfried Hermann, Minister of Transport for Baden-Württemberg, Ronald Pofalla, DB Infrastructure Director, and Andrea Klöber, the tunnel's patroness. Representatives of the consortium and the press were also present at the ceremony.

With the last breakthrough at a depth of around 13 metres, the drive for the 3.5-kilometre-long Bad Cannstatt tunnel was successfully completed. Two bench tunnelling operations and the reworking of the tunnels will continue until around mid-December 2020. The new Rosenstein suburban railway tunnel will connect the station “Mittnachtstraße” with the existing route from Stuttgart main station in the direction of Bad Cannstatt from 2025 on.
