Setting off for the Europaviertel: W&F is constructing the underground track for the U5

On 7 January 2026, Stadtbahn Entwicklung und Verkehrsinfrastrukturprojekte Frankfurt GmbH (SBEV) awarded the contract for the construction of the underground track for the new Europaviertel light rail line to the bidding consortium Wayss & Freytag Ingenieurbau AG / Rhomberg Sersa Bahntechnik GmbH. This new line is an extension of the U5 route from Platz der Republik (near the main railway station) westwards through the Europaviertel district.

The project, which is right on the doorstep of our headquarters, is being implemented by the Major Projects division in collaboration with UT/BWE and carried out in a joint venture (ARGE) with Rhomberg.

As part of the project, around 2,600 metres of track will be laid in two already completed tunnel tubes. The majority of the track will be constructed as a slab track. Parallel to the tracks, cable conduit systems will be concreted on both sides, which will also serve as edge, emergency and rescue routes in the future.

Tight space constraints, parallel structural work and ongoing rail traffic pose particular challenges and require highly complex logistics and technically demanding implementation. The construction period is scheduled to last 18 months, followed by an operational and maintenance phase of around two years.
