Safeguarding the drinking water supply: Foundation stone laid for new elevated tank

We are delighted to be realising the construction of the new drinking water storage tank in Düsseldorf! In order to ensure a reliable supply of drinking water for the coming decades, Stadtwerke Düsseldorf is replacing the elevated tank III built in 1912 with the modern drinking water storage tank VI.

The new building will secure the supply of drinking water for around 800,000 people in Düsseldorf, Mettmann and Erkrath in the long term. Drinking water has been stored in the Auf der Hardt forest area in Gerresheim for over 150 years.

Following the dismantling of the old reservoir, the foundation stone for the new elevated tank has now been ceremoniously laid - accompanied by a ceremony including a time capsule, which was also attended by Mayor Dr Stephan Keller and Julien Mounier, Chairman of the Board of Stadtwerke. The new storage facility will have a capacity of 10,000 cubic metres. Commissioning is planned for 2029.

Thomas Fiedler, Divison Manager at Wayss & Freytag, emphasises: ‘Modern infrastructure creates security and stability - it connects people, regions and generations - a “connection for life”.’
