Construction of U5 Sengelmannstraße - Bramfeld can start

Another important milestone has been reached for the first construction phase of the U5:
Whilst work in the City Nord and Sengelmannstraße areas is already in full swing, HOCHBAHN U5 Projekt GmbH has now also awarded the construction contract for the remaining section of the route, from the future access shaft east of the Sengelmannstraße station to Bramfeld. The companies Ed. Züblin AG (ZÜBLIN) and Wayss & Freytag Ingenieurbau AG will carry out the construction of this section of Hamburg’s new underground line as a joint venture (ARGE) with ZÜBLIN taking the lead on technical matters, in order to connect districts such as Steilshoop and Bramfeld – and thus more than 100,000 residents – to the rapid transit network for the first time. This means that the contract has been awarded to the construction companies that are already building the section in the City Nord and Sengelmannstraße areas.

Construction of three new stations and a metro line using tunnel-boring techniques

The section of track, approximately four kilometres long, running from the launch shaft east of the existing Sengelmannstraße U1 station to Bramfeld will be constructed using a tunnel boring machine. It comprises the three planned stations – Barmbek Nord, Steilshoop and the terminus at Bramfeld – which will be built using the cut-and-cover method. The first construction works by the consortium are due to start in 2024 and will initially involve the construction of diaphragm walls for the two new stations, Bramfeld and Barmbek Nord. At the same time, work in the City Nord and Sengelmannstraße areas will also continue. The first trial runs for the fully automated trains are scheduled to begin here in 2027, before passenger services are expected to commence from 2029.

The U5 will run over a total distance of around 24 kilometres. It will start in the east of Hamburg, serving districts such as Bramfeld and Steilshoop. Via City Nord, through Winterhude and Uhlenhorst, the new, fully automated underground line will continue into the city centre. From there, it will head north, passing the University and the UKE, to Lokstedt, from where the U5 will continue on to the arenas. Twenty-three stations will be built on the new line, eight of which will offer connections to the existing underground and S-Bahn networks. Germany’s largest underground project will thus connect 180,000 Hamburg residents to the rapid transit services for the first time – or, rather, improve their connections. Once the entire line is complete, around 270,000 passengers are expected to use it every day.
