Wayss Freytag Ingenieurbau AG, in a joint venture with its partner Ed. Züblin AG, was awarded the contract for the design – including a construction option – of tender packages 2 (tunnels) and 4 (structural engineering) for the Stuttgart – Singen – German/Swiss border by DB Netz AG, represented by DB Projekt Stuttgart-Ulm GmbH.
The alliance project is being implemented as a ‘Rail Partnership’ model, in which an alliance team comprising the project sponsor, designers and contractors is formed as early as the planning phase. The partnership model is also being successfully implemented by Wayss Freytag, amongst others, in the currently ongoing alliance pilot project ‘Neues Werk Cottbus’.
Contract Package 2 comprises the design and construction of the approximately 11 km-long Pfaffensteig Tunnel. Several tunnelling methods will be used in the construction of this railway tunnel, which comprises two single-track tubes: 2 x 9.8 kilometres of the tunnel will be excavated using TBM tunnelling. A further 2 x 1.0 kilometres will be driven using conventional tunnelling methods, whilst 2 x 0.3 kilometres will be constructed using the open-cut method. The contract scope for this tender package also includes the construction of 23 connecting structures at intervals of 500 metres, as well as an underground emergency access route.
Contract Package 4 comprises the design and construction of, amongst other things, four railway overpasses, noise barriers, a retaining structure and the extension of two culverts. The scope of this contract package also includes the design and construction of an overpass, two troughs for the north and south tunnels, and three retaining structures.
The project was launched during a four-day Alliance Campus event attended by around 80 participants, with the aim of laying the foundations for a shared alliance culture.

As part of the planning phase that has now commenced, the initial steps will involve planning (including obtaining planning permission) and determining the target costs.
