New contract: Extension of
Metro Line 5 West from Laim to Pasing

On 21 December 2023, the City of Munich awarded the contract to the consortium Wayss & Freytag Ingenieurbau AG / Ed. Züblin AG / Max Bögl Stiftung & Co. KG to construct the extension of Underground Line 5-West, Contract Section 2, from Laim to Pasing.

The extension of the U-5 from Laim to the Pasing railway station transport hub is an important step towards expanding public transport in Munich. The 2,690-metre-long construction lot begins west of the new Willibaldstraße underground station with a launch shaft, runs via the new Am Knie underground station and ends with a stabling yard west of the new Pasing underground station.

The works comprise the construction of a new underground tunnel, including the launch shaft, as well as the construction of two new underground stations, Am Knie and Pasing, with the associated line tunnels. The construction site is located in a densely built-up inner-city area. The tunnel sections are being constructed using the closed-cut method with shield machines employing the segmental lining method and a boring diameter of approximately 7.75 m. The two stations are being built using the bored-pile-and-slab method and the diaphragm wall-and-slab method respectively. Extensive specialist civil engineering and dewatering measures form part of the overall contract, as do three inner-city emergency exit structures, the construction of the slab track with a heavy mass-spring system, and track-laying works, etc.

The construction period is 96 months, with work due to commence on 1 March 2024.
