A major step in a major construction project
Construction of the Fehmarn Belt project took another major step forward on 21 September.
Early on Tuesday morning, 21 September, the Femern Link Contractors (FLC) joint venture switched on the large pumps that will fill the three large basins at the tunnel factory in Rødbyhavn with water. Wayss & Freytag Ingenieurbau is a partner in the FLC joint venture.
The Fehmarn Belt project is the largest construction site in Northern Europe, and the filling of the basins is part of a sophisticated plan that must be completed before the large tunnel segments can be manufactured next year and progressively towed into the Fehmarn Belt.
The basins will be filled with water gradually as part of a closely monitored process to prevent damage to the dykes between the basins. The filling of the basins is expected to take up to a week, whilst the basins are being constructed on a scale unprecedented in Northern Europe.

It’s always exciting to do something for the first time, and the basins play a key role in the overall project. Their sheer size alone makes this day a spectacular event on the construction site,” says Anders Wede, site manager at Femern A/S.
