Departure for the Europaviertel: W&F builds the underground track for the U5 underground line
On 7 January 2026, Stadtbahn Entwicklung und Verkehrsinfrastrukturprojekte Frankfurt GmbH (SBEV) awarded the bidding consortium Wayss & Freytag Ingenieurbau AG / Rhomberg Sersa Bahntechnik GmbH the contract to build the underground track for the new Europaviertel light rail line. This new line is an extension of the U5 line from Platz der Republik (near the main railway station) westwards through the Europaviertel district.
The project "right on the doorstep" of our head office is being realised by the Major Projects division together with UT/BWE and is being carried out in a joint venture with Rhomberg.
As part of the project, around 2,600 metres of track will be constructed in two already completed tunnel tubes. The majority of the track is being built as slab track. Parallel to the tracks, empty cable conduit systems are being concreted on both sides, which will also serve as edge, emergency and rescue routes in future.
Tight space conditions, parallel structural work and the ongoing railway traffic pose particular challenges and require highly complex logistics and technically demanding implementation. The construction period is scheduled to last 18 months, followed by an approximately two-year operation and maintenance phase.
