In June 2013, Area South, Department “Bauen im Bestand” (construction in existing buildings), was awarded the contract for the upgrading of the old works canteen (building A3) at the MAN production site in Munich Karlsfeld. Extensive rehabilitation work had to be done on the old works canteen with regard to fire protection and visual appearance. The extension has a building volume of approx. 5,000 m³. A great deal of conversion work was required within the old building where up to 3,000 MAN employees spend their lunchtime every day.
For this purpose, an old part of the building was replaced by a new building in which the meeting place on the ground floor was enlarged and additional storage and technical rooms were built on the upper floor. The old canteen was rehabilitated with regard to fire protection and provided with state-of-the-art lighting and building services technology while remaining fully operational.
The old HVACR system also had to remain operational at all times and be adapted to the new requirements to ensure continued use as a meeting place.
