The Westerschelde tunnel ensured the first safe connection between the provinces of Zeeuwsch-Vlaanderen and Zuid-Beveland in the Netherlands. High water pressures in connection with loose soil posed new challenges to tunnel construction.

The North-South link Antwerp is part of the Brussels-Amsterdam high-speed line. The project comprises the reconstruction of the existing accesses, the construction of a passage under the main station as well as the construction of two tunnel sections from „Astridplatz“ to „Damplatz“.
