With a big public celebration, the Mayor of Düsseldorf, Thomas Geisel, opened the Wehrhahn Line in the capital of North Rhine Westphalia together with State Secretary Enak Ferlemann (Member of the German Bundestag (Parliament), MdB), Federal Secretary for Construction, Michael Groschek (Member of the Landtag (regional parliament), MdL), W&F Board Member Dr.-Eng. Michael Blaschko and Head of the Area Centre, Thomas Fiedler.

The approx. 75 m long tunnel runs under the listed Kaufhof building in the heart of the city of Dusseldorf, which made it a particular civil engineering challenge. The tunnel was driven under the protection of a freezing body. With a complex monitoring concept, the engineers successfully controlled possible settlements of the Art nouveau building in the millimetre range: in fact, no settlements were recorded as a result of the construction work underground.

More than 100,000 guests celebrated the opening of the new traffic artery and made use of the free ride along the line. The new underground line will transport more than 50,000 people per day.

Construction Project of the Year! Underground station Heinrich-Heine-Allee and tunnel under Kaufhof at the “Kö” receive award for outstanding engineering

The infrastructure project in Düsseldorf was awarded the prize for „Construction Project of the Year 2014“ by the Düsseldorfer Architekten- und Ingenieurverein (AIV) (association of architects and engineers). This was the first time this prize was awarded for an engineering achievement in connection with a structure. „A tremendous achievement, unrivalled in its dimensions,“ explained Dieter Schmoll, head of AIV with regard to the project.

"The combination of complex technical procedures and the smooth manner in which all solutions were put into practice, makes the new underground station Heinrich-Heine-Allee, as centrepiece of the Düsseldorf Wehrhahn Line, particularly noteworthy. Especially the ambitious tunnel under the Kaufhof building at the “Kö” proved to be one of the biggest challenges for the engineers." was how Dieter Schmoll summarized the decision taken. "When building this tunnel section of the Wehrhahn line, it is thanks to the successful cooperation of all parties involved in the construction that all special foundation works such as diaphragm walls, jet grouting measures, rotary drilling works and controlled drillings were able to be carried out successfully. The frozen body with dimensions of 18m in height, 34m width and 75m length deserves particular mention“. The project management and the project supervision by the municipality of Düsseldorf were also awarded a prize. The approx. 300 members of the AIV association chose this project out of several construction projects to be awarded the prize as Construction Project of the Year 2014 with a significant majority.
