A9 Open to traffic

After a construction period of not quite 3 years, the A9 motorway section between Triptis and Schleiz was opened to traffic in a ceremony on September 5, 2014 by the Federal Minister of Transport, Alexander Dobrindt. Thus, the last construction section of the A9 motorway between the border of the federal states of Thuringia and Bavaria and the “Lederhose” junction has been completed. The traffic now flows on six lanes. In the course of the A9 PPP project from Triptis to Schleiz, Wayss & Freytag Ingenieurbau, in a joint venture with their partner Eurovia, built a new 19 km long section of the A9 motorway as well as 24 new structures.

W&F board member Dr.-Ing. Michael Blaschko emphasized the European dimension of the project, which is not only limited to the infrastructural significance for passenger and goods transport. The members of the joint venture belong to French and Dutch groups of companies. The project brought seven different nationalities together. 3 million cubic meters of earth was moved and a total of 551,000 square metres of concrete road surface poured.

The project also included the construction of motorway parking areas with toilets, the entire landscaping works of the 19 kilometre section, the passive safety features (crash barriers), signage and marking of the motorway.

„We can be proud of our staff“, said an obviously pleased project manager Klaus-Peter Zellmer. „The A9 team has delivered an excellent result. The construction of the 24 overpasses took only 19 months. On average, every 1.2 months a bridge was either installed or concreted, considering the construction period from the installation of the first to the last girder – a very good performance by the site team.“

The responsible persons from the internal client VGT were also enthusiastic about the good performance, as was expressed in a letter of congratulation from Philippe Rossignol, managing director of Via Gateway Thüringen Verwaltungsgesellschaft mbH:

„After the 6-lane A9 motorway has been opened to traffic and on behalf of VGT and their shareholders, I would like to express my sincere thanks for the work well done. It was a strong performance, which you mastered well: congratulations.“
