Groundbreaking ceremony in Gateway Gardens

Light Railway Tunnel for the Global Business Village

Southwest of Frankfurt one of the most spectacular urban districts in Germany is taking shape. The new Gateway Gardens quarter at Frankfurt airport connects people and possibilities at one of the most important traffic junctions in Europe.

Now, the groundbreaking ceremony for the approximately 2 km long double-track suburban railway tunnel, the centrepiece of the new light railway section, has taken place. The Hessian Minister of Transport, Tarek Al-Wazir, Prof. Dirk Rompf, Board Member Network Planning and Large-scale Projects of DB Netz AG (German Railway), the Frankfurt Municipal Department Head of Traffic Oesterling, Prof. Knut Ringat, Spokesman of the Management of Rhein-Main-Verkehrsverbund (Rhine-Main traffic association) as well as Wayss & Freytag Board Member Dr. Michael Blaschko jointly launched the construction of the new traffic artery. Wayss & Freytag Ingenieurbau, Area Centre, will be building the centrepiece of the light railway section, an approx. 2 km long double-track tunnel. This tunnel runs below the A5 motorway Frankfurt – Basel and the B43 national road as well as the entire Gateway Gardens area. The tunnel will be built in the open construction method. The tunnel section under the A5 motorway and the B 43 national road will be carried out in the top-down method. The cross-section of the tunnel is approx. 11 m wide and 6 m high. For the tunnel construction approx. 900,000 m³ earth have to be moved and 180,000 m³ concrete poured. The new light railway section will complete the ideal transport link to the highly attractive area in direct proximity of Frankfurt airport and will thus ensure that the city centre of Frankfurt with the financial district and the European Central Bank can be reached from the airport within 15 minutes. A traffic link of such intensity is unique in Europe. In a few years´ time the new quarter will provide workplaces for up to 18,000 people.
